I realize that it’s been a while… but we’ve hit kind of a special occasion and thought I would throw some thoughts out there for anyone considering amputation or worrying about it…
This beautiful little fuzz butt is over a year post op…. and we missed the ampuversary announcement because hubby and I found out that we are expecting our first little human baby to join all our fur and feather babies! That being said… we waited until now to update everyone on miss Harley because Friday will be her second birth post-op!!! Harley will be turning 11 on St. Patrick’s Day… and she is one lucky cat indeed! Her 10th and 11th birthdays would not have happened if we had not considered amputating her back leg that was riddled with osteosarcoma. We did what we had to do to help her out, and we are so glad that we did!
Harley is living the dream life with her dog brother (who she secretly loves to cuddle), lizard and chicken sisters, and will soon have a baby human to pal around with! Her favorite activities include eating, sleeping either under our bed covers or in a nice sunny spot, and lately joining us out on our new deck during the nice weather for some cuddle time. Luckily she is pretty scared of nature considering she has always been an indoor cat, so she doesn’t go anywhere but back inside… especially when the chickens hide under the deck and call to her… 😛
In case anyone is wondering about quality of life for this little beauty on three legs… she treats life as if it hasn’t changed in the slightest! We bought a tiered cat condo on which to put her food (so she wouldn’t have to climb crazy things and her brother wouldn’t eat everything on her…) but she prefers to come up onto our bed for a cuddle before jumping flying squirrel style to the condo. She still likes to chase around the laser pointer… hooking her back toes into the carpet and rolling/zooming all around and through our coffee table. She has adjusted and made full use of the litter boxes that we have placed on both levels of our home, and she loves to sleep on mine or hubby’s bellies at night (more hubby’s than mine now that baby is coming!). With her fur all grown in, you can’t even tell that she is missing a leg… she has rounded back out nicely!
When her vet retired in November, he gave her a clean bill of health upon her final examination and proclaimed her a very lucky little cat! She is a perfectly happy little purball… and given the chance we would make the same decision again and again and again to have her this happy and healthy and in our home! Now I have to go as somebody is craving my attention and is pushing my laptop off my lap! 🙂
We went from a three months tops prognosis to over a year and counting… consider making that choice for a pet you love! It’s definitely worth the shot!

Finally…. finally…. FINALLY! The last spot for the surgical drain has closed up! No more goopy spots all over the place… no more ooze!!! Harley’s incision site is like a thing of the past and now that we have finally sealed up all the areas she doesn’t have to take her antibiotics anymore!!!! Yayyyyyy!!! 🙂
Baby girl was totally thrilled with her last dosage tonight as I pulled the covers back up over her head and she settled right back into her little protective cocoon. The vet even called today just to see how she was doing, and once they heard the wound had finally closed they said “See ya in September!” 🙂
Harley’s birthday is coming up next month (St. Patrick’s Day!) and we plan on celebrating in some manner befitting a cat of her stature… Probably leaving her be so she can lay in the sun all day… extra fishy food…. that sort of thing. She and Mush are getting along quite well, and she now trots right by him on the way to sleeping on mine or Daddy’s belly. She’s taken to rolling around which is really cute, and she has completely figured out how to groom and scratch the side of herself with no foot. All in all… a very happy cat!!!
At first they had told us she would have three to four months to live… and we’re keeping our fingers crossed that we find nothing creeping up I think we’re going to make it way past that!! 🙂 <3
And now… for the pictures…
I’m older…. and what I say goes! Now what do you think about this issue? Mushu helps Daddy with his work out Is he gone??? So you thought you were going to do some lesson planning today…. Think again…
I’m hoping to post some comparative pictures of the gruesome and icky looking stuff in one of my follow-up posts so that people know what to expect and what is normal and what is not…. Gotta gather all my yucka pictures together I guess…. 😛Filed under Uncategorized | Comments (4)
Can you believe it’s been a month that Harley has been a tripawd??? We can’t even fathom how quickly everything has gone for all of us!
Harley really doesn’t have too much to report…. her drain spot still hasn’t completely healed so we’re keeping an eye on that and trying a new antibiotic. The vet thinks that it could be an internal stitch that hasn’t dissolved quite yet and it’s bugging the inside, so we’re going to see what’s up with that. Everything else is normal though, and baby girl is hopping all around the house again! She’s even done a few things that she used to do before the amputation like sleeping on my stomach at night, or coming downstairs to meow at us if we don’t go to bed at a reasonable hour.
She’s getting pretty stealthy at this point too, sneaking down the stairs and scaring the crap out of us by appearing next to us! Harley and Mushu have reached a sort of unspoken peace, so they spend lots of time in the same vicinity with few issues! Since we’ve let her have the run of the house again she’s stopped peeing outside the box, and has only used her secondary first floor box once. Other than that she’s looking pretty hunky dory!
We’ll be checking back in with the vet in a week to see if this new antibiotic has helped the drain site close up a little faster… but for now here’s some pics of our girl! 🙂 And yes…. I know… I love my pajama pants…. a lot…. after work…. 😛
God I’m cute… Comfy as can be! Super-Bowlin’! We were both begging for snacks… And we gottem! How can you not love this crazy cat?? I now claim this coffee table as mine…Filed under Uncategorized | Comments (2)
Thankfully it’s been another great week for me! Mum and Dad have finally been letting me out of my room regularly which is great, just not when they’re not home. They’re worried I’ll get too bold and try to sneak past the dog and then get stuck with him wanting to play too rough! Dunno why they’re worried so much… he’s really afraid of me once I start to put up my dukes! 🙂
No more pain meds either! They tasted gross, and I’m feeling pretty fit! I can get down the stairs alright and walk around for a while, but I’m still having trouble getting back up without getting tired. Luckily Mum and Dad have been nice enough to carry me back upstairs at night.
One thing that still makes me angry is the antibiotics. My surgical drain spot is still a little oozy (okay it was A LOT oozy the beginning of the week) and the vet put me back on my antibiotics for a while. It’s looking much better, but I’m still not enjoying having that crap forced on me. I’ve taken to hiding in the little cubby hole thing in my condo… Mum and Dad have to tip me out to give me my meds and clean the drain spot, which I find rather amusing. I’ve gotten pretty good at bracing my feet against the walls so that they have to slowly and carefully pry me out…
I’m also still pooping regularly!!!! Mum has been good about helping me out with some stool softener, but I think even that will go away in a few days once we’re sure that this is legit… Other than that, my fur is starting to grow back in and I’ve discovered that I LOVEEE being brushed! That’s my reward for taking my meds each time… I get a few minutes of primping! 🙂
Anyway… I’m just chillin’ here on the couch with Mum and Mushu. He’s being really good about sharing his space, considering that before the surgery I didn’t really come downstairs too often… I usually hid in Mum’s room under the bed. I really like it down here with my family though!!
Coming up on one month now! Hope to update you again about my awesome progress in another week! Thanks to everybody (biped, tripawd and quadruped) who has sent me love and support over the last few weeks! It means a lot to me, Mum, Dad and Mushu too! 🙂
Peekaboo!!!! Ahhhhh…. now this is what I’m talking about! 🙂 So what do you guys wanna watch?Filed under Uncategorized | Comment (1)
